name sydney
age 2 years and six months
gender female
species / breed border collie
appearance syd looks like any purebred border collie would. short, silky fur and a long thin build. she is perfect for running, just like any herding dog would be. her legs propel her, her tail balances her and her body keeps her sturdy. sharp brown eyes give humans a reason to believe that syd is much more intelligent than they give her credit for. and she is. her sharp brown eyes are chocolate colored and her gaze, being the great mother she is, never misses anything. her fur pattern is the almost typical collie style. her body is mainly black with long white stockings on her feet. a white diamond shape on her forehead opens up onto her muzzle and carries onto her chest, with black freckles on her muzzle.
personality syd is definitely a free spirit, she doesn't feel assigned to any single place, she wanders from place to place with a sense of adventure. there are very few things in the world that can bring syd back to earth, well just two: her mate and her family. they are the only one's in the world that can make her feel loyal, the only ones who can claim ownership of her and get away unscathed. her family is her world and without them she would surely become suicidal. with her family she is the perfect mom, patient and willing. she would catch the moon if they asked her to and she hates to disappoint them. she is also very protective of them, willing to loose her life if it meant they could keep theirs. with other dogs, it's like syd morphs into a different dog. she isn't violent, she just isn't friendly. she refuses to trust other dogs and she will never lower her guard. it's hard to worm your way into her good graces. syd doesn't really have friends, just aquantinces. her best friend is her mate and that about sums up her friends.
history syd was born to a lovely couple, an older couple that agreed this would be their last in a long line of litters, all of which had died off of a hereditary disease from their mother. sydney rae, as her purebred papers said, was an only child. she was a loved child, spoiled rotten by a strays standard. some how, syd never felt happy in that life. she didn't like staying in one place and being owned. more often then not, she got in trouble for disappearing in the night and the longest she was ever gone was an entire week. if became clear to her parents that she was never gonna be happy in this house environment. not that it mattered, soon syd's owners found themselves unable to handle the flighty collie and they searched for an owner to replace them. a ten month old syd's life changed on a perfectly sunny day. a young couple, a blonde haired female and a brown haired male, came and picked syd up. little did young syd know, she would never see her home again and she would never see her parents again either. they both died in their sleep that same day, peacefully and side by side.
like her previous owner, liz and zeke, as thats what they called each other, dotted on her. they got her chipped and she got her shots. they didn't fix her because she was a purebred, but they did put a tracking chip in her fur. when syd was recovered from the poking and prodding, they let her go and explore. it was a big fenced in area and another dog was trapped with her. he was a male dog, still young and playful. both of them knew nothing of what they were brought together for. they were playmates, close friends of the same breed. they were left alone to bond and to play. they weren't ever let out of the cage, they were both fed together. soon they were inseparable, one never far from the other. syd matured before him, as most females do, and she began to feel attracted to the male, he playmate. it was an animalistic feeling, hardly love. soon the two invented a new game, a game that won approval from the owners. the game involved him getting on top of her and trapping her with his paws. he would then lower himself onto her and cause her extreme pain. she would always turn around and snap at him, causing him to bleed. syd did not like this game, but it was clear her playmate enjoyed it. her owner did as well.
finally the game was over and she was taken to the doctors house. he tested her and came up with clear results. the male had won the game, syd was pregnant with her first litter. the next months brought the same thing; trapped inside all day with a slowly bulging abdomen. she knew what was going on but she didn't feel connected to the pups like she knew any other mother would. liz and zeke couldn't be more pleased, always bursting with excitement and petting her and doting on her even more than normal. finally the day came when she knew it was time. a wetness under her tail signaled the birth of her first litter. labor was long and painful but nearly 10 hours later, she had five purebred border collie pups at her side. oddly, they weren't her pride and joy. in fact, she felt oddly detached from the world as a familiar black figure came through the door. she didn't growl or defend her pups from the monster who created them, instead she meekly glared at him.
luckily, the male wouldn't come near the pups or, more importantly, her. no one seemed to notice the discomfort of syd, or the longing glances she cast toward the door. slowly the pups grew older, grew bigger and stronger. soon they were allowed to go out, but syd was never allowed to stray far from her pups, out of fear that she would never come back. once the pups were weaned, she was finally allowed to go out on her own. she spent every night outside in the yard, looking at the world beyond the fence. she sometimes saw a rusty orange gaze looking back at her, but the gaze never came closer and she never tried to talk to the glowing pair of eyes. perhaps she should have. only a few more weeks passed before the day syd had been waiting for, the day her pups would finally leave her, the day they finally let her roam free. she went the first week without coming back, simply preferring to roam and get in time before they trapped her again.
when she came back, they patted her and rushed off again, like they hadn't noticed she was missing. so that's how her life went, she left in the morning and came back at night. finally, she met the orange gaze that had watched her on those lonely nights. he was a handsome australian shepherd and he captivated her, but not in the way that the other male had. this felt emotional, not physical. she liked spending time with him and he met her outside her doorstep every morning. he enjoyed being with her as well, he often said, with a joyful expression on his face. this was so much better then the game she used to play with that other stupid dog. she wanted nothing more to do with the father of her first litter, she decided. life never goes as planned it seems. soon syd found herself in the same cage as before with the same male, a male who was not the puppy he used to be. he seemed very willing to get down to business, but this time she wouldn't let him near her rear, snapping and twisting until he gave up. one day, he was relentless and she was beginning to tire. one of her paws slipped and she fell. he was quick to take up the opportunity.
he would never get the chance. a familiar brown figure threw himself at the male, pushing him off of her. the males fought viciously until the humans pulled them apart. the brown dog took a place next to her and snarled until the other dog was taken away. syd was soon lead away, try as she might to run the her saviors side, and so was her hero. syd's heat was soon over and there was no chance to let her breed again. life went back to the way it was except now she had the love of her life by her side. soon her heat came again and this time it was a more pleasant experience. soon she was pregnant and this time she gave birth to four children. this time the pups were her pride and joy. this time she knew she had a family. this time, syd was not going to let anything happen to them.
